The village under the lake
Speegleville is named for Wash Speegle, a blacksmith and farmer who settled there in 1849. It sits on the west side of Lake Waco along State Highway 6, about 8 miles west of Waco. When the Lake Waco dam was raised in the early 1960s, the original village went under the water. Today Speegleville Park has a beach and campgrounds on the lake.
